3rd Annual Kids Day at the Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon

BOSTON – May 29, 2019 – This July, the Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon will once again encourage fitness and healthy activities in youth by introducing them to the multisport world.  Boston’s only triathlon is inviting kids throughout Greater Boston to experience and combine a few of the different elements of a triathlon, including swimming and running at its 2019 Kids Day on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) Carson Beach in South Boston.

“Kids Day at the Boston Triathlon offers young athletes an opportunity to try something new and different, by challenging them physically, mentally and socially by strengthening their minds and bodies through sports,” said Michael O’Neil, president of the Boston Triathlon.  “We invite all kids from Greater Boston to come out on July 27 and participate.”

The event will feature activities dedicated solely to kids, including the USA Triathlon-sanctioned Kids Splash & Dash for athletes ages 7-15 and the Kids Fun Run for athletes under the age of 7.

Part of USA Triathlon’s Splash & Dash Youth Aquathlon Series, the annual Splash & Dash event is designed to introduce young athletes ages 7-15 to the sport of triathlon.  Athletes will be placed in one of four age groups: ages 7-8, ages 9-10, ages 11-12, and ages 13-15. The 7-8 and 9-10 age groups will swim 100 yards and run an untimed 1K. The 11-12 age group will swim 200 yards and run an untimed 2K. The 13-15 age group will swim 200 yards and run a timed 2K.

The swimming will take place at DCR Carson Beach in South Boston near the McCormack Bathhouse and will be in shallow water. The run will take place on the Harborwalk and the DCR Mother’s Rest Field.

Youth groups from across the city will once again have their kids participate in the events on July 27th, including the South Boston Leadership Initiative and Youth Enrichment Services (YES), nonprofit organizations based in Boston that provide the city’s youth with year-round enrichment, fitness and leadership programs.

“For the third year, YES youth will participate in the Boston Triathlon, challenging themselves in a different way that boosts their confidence,” said Bryan Van Dorpe, Executive Director of YES. “The Boston Triathlon has offered our young people a wonderful opportunity and we look forward to being a part of the event again this year.”

Now in its seventh year, the USA Triathlon Splash & Dash Youth Aquathlon Series is comprised of more than 60 events across the country. The focus of the events is participation, rather than competition and is geared towards introducing youth participants to the world of multisport.  More than 500 kids are expected to participate in Boston.
