2016 Olympian Ben Kanute and North American Ironman Champion Angela Naeth Lead the 2018 Field
BOSTON – May 23, 2018 – On July 21 and 22, 2018, more than 2,000 athletes from Boston, 42 states and 15 countries, plus thousands of spectators will head to South Boston for the 10th annual Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon.
Ben Kanute, who competed on Team USA in triathlon at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and subsequently placed 2nd at the 2017 70.3 Ironman World Championships will join 2015 North American Ironman Champion Angela Naeth to lead the field at this USAT-sanctioned event.
“Over the years, we have seen increased interest in the Boston Triathlon, as it has grown from a community event to one that attracts an international presence to the South Boston Waterfront, bringing in athletes from across the world to Boston,” said Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh. “On behalf of the City, I want to congratulate the Boston Triathlon on its 10th anniversary and wish all of the athletes a great day of competition.”
The only triathlon held in the city of Boston, the Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon will take place at Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) Carson Beach in South Boston. The event features both an Olympic distance competition and a Sprint distance race and includes a swim at DCR Carson Beach, a bike ride on DCR William Day Boulevard, and a run in Moakley Park. Participants can compete individually or as part of a team or relay, and the races will be followed by a celebratory after-party.
“The Boston Triathlon has become a signature event in Boston. We are one of the fastest growing triathlons in the country and that growth has allowed the event to be a force for good in the city and allowed us to make a positive impact on our community. We are grateful to city, the state and the neighborhood of South Boston for supporting this exciting growth” said Michael O’Neil, president of the Boston Triathlon. “We want to share our love of multisport with athletes of all ages and abilities, creating an incredible experience for every participant while highlighting the greatest city in the world. We look forward to another ten years here in Boston!”
On Saturday, July 21, kids of all ages are expected at DCR Carson Beach for the annual Kids Day at the Boston Triathlon. Designed to inspire a future generation and provide a positive pathway with sports, Kids Day will feature the USAT Kids Splash-and-Dash event for athletes ages 7-15 and the Kids Fun Run for all athletes under the age of 7. Youth groups from across the city have already signed on to participate in the events on July 21, including the South Boston Leadership Initiative and Youth Enrichment Services (YES), a nonprofit organization based in Boston that provides Boston’s youth with year-round outdoor enrichment and leadership programs.
Boston Medical Center, the largest safety-net hospital and busiest provider of trauma and emergency services in New England is the official charity partner for the event. Charitable money raised by athletes and corporate partners will help fight the opioid epidemic, going directly to BMC’s adolescent, young adult and adult addiction programs at the Grayken Center for Addiction, which serves as the umbrella for all of BMC’s work in addiction including treatment, training, research and prevention. “Columbia Threadneedle’s sponsorship of the Boston Triathlon is an important investment in the Boston community. It’s inspiring to see so many athletes, including our own employees, pushing toward an important goal – whether that’s beating a personal record or just participating in their first triathlon,” said Ted Truscott, CEO of Columbia Threadneedle Investments. “Importantly, funds raised will help local communities fight opioid dependency through the efforts of Boston Medical Center, making it even more meaningful.”
For the second year, Boston’s only triathlon will host the Boston Corporate Cup, a friendly competition between Boston’s corporate community to compete against one another while engaging employees in an active lifestyle. Participants can compete in the Sprint distance event as an individual or as part of a company relay team, completing a 750M swim, a 17.5K bike and a 5K run. The winning team will receive a custom-designed trophy as well as bragging rights for the next year. There will also be an award for the top fundraising team.
