Newton, MA October 30, 2018 —  Newton’s New Philharmonia Orchestra, Francisco Noya, Music Director, will open its 2018-2019 Season with Masters and Their Masterpieces, the first performance in the Classics series.  The performances will take place on Saturday, November 17 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 18 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 848 Beacon Street in Newton Centre.  Tickets for the performances are $10-48 and are now available online at www.newphil.org

From Brahms to Beethoven, the New Phil’s Classics series features the work of some of the most revered classical composers.   The first performance in this series, Masters and Their Masterpieces will feature works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Dmitri Shostakovich and Richard Strauss.

Often called the greatest of four overtures Beethoven composed for his only opera, Leonore Overture No. 3 will be followed by Cello Concerto No. 1 by Shostakovich, featuring Newton’s extraordinary Lev Mamuya as the cello soloist.  This work is considered to be Shostakovich’s finest concerto; rich in powerful musical ideas with extraordinary writing for the solo cello.

Lev Mamuya, now 22, is a recent graduate of Harvard College where he was enrolled in the Harvard-New England Conservatory dual degree program, studying with Paul Katz and is currently completing his Master’s in Music in cello performance at New England Conservatory where he studies with Yeesun Kim.  Lev has performed as featured soloist with the Florida Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, South Bend Symphony, Ann Arbor Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, and Brevard Concert Orchestra.  An alumnus of the PBS radio program “From the Top”, he has appeared and taken masterclasses and lessons with Ronald Leonard, Andres Diaz, Raphael Wallfisch, Colin Carr as well as with Peggy Pearson and Winsor Music, Lev is looking forward to a fellowship with the Grammy-nominated string orchestra A Far Cry this spring.

New Phil will close their fall program with Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier Suite. Based on Der Rosenkavalier, a comic opera in three acts, the orchestral Suite shares the story of Baron von Ochs and his quest to win the beautiful Sophie von Faninal and rich soaring melodies, rich harmony and spectacular beauty.

The 2018-2019 New Phil Classics Series also includes An Evening of Brahms on March 9-10, 2019 and American Fête on May 18-19, 2019.  In addition, the New Phil presents its two annual Family Concerts including Celebrations! on December 16, 2018 and Quintessentially American on April 28, 2019.

About Francisco Noya, Music Director

Francisco Noya was appointed music director of New Philharmonia in the spring of 2016, following the 20-year tenure of founding Music Director Ron Knudsen. Noya began his professional career in his native Venezuela as conductor of the Youth Orchestra of Valencia, one of the original ensembles of El Sistema.. Today, Noya is a prominent figure in the Boston and New England music scene and has earned a reputation as a versatile interpreter of symphonic and operatic literature. In addition to his appointment at the New Philharmonia Orchestra, he also serves as resident conductor of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, the music director & conductor of the Boston Civic Symphony and is a respected member of the conducting faculty of the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

 

About the New Philharmonia Orchestra

The New Philharmonia Orchestra, founded in 1995, is a 75-member nonprofessional regional orchestra based in Newton. The orchestra’s mission to perform “music for all” has been advanced by presenting programs of diverse repertoires of classical music for the enjoyment of audiences of all ages and experiences. The orchestra also strives to provide its nonprofessional players the opportunity to achieve a high level of ensemble performance not otherwise available.
