It’s Not Enough to Just Show Up

They say 80% of life is just showing up. To some extent, that’s true. Nothing will happen if you don’t bother to be present.

But it’s not enough to just show up.

The New England Patriots are preparing to play in the Superbowl this weekend. They have shown up all season and earned their way to the big game. But if they just show up on Sunday, it won’t be enough. If they don’t deliver a win, there will be no trophy, no confetti, and no parade. Tom Brady won’t get his record breaking 5th win. And critics across the country will second guess the game plan, the coaching and the players.

But when if/assuming they show up, draw on their months of preparation, execute a thoroughly researched game plan and deliver the expected result, they’ll be celebrated across the country.

It’s relevant not just to football, but to every individual and across every vertical. We can write a press release and send it out – but if we don’t have a plan to generate stories, does it matter? If we craft the best message points ever yet never work with a client to ensure delivery, will anyone hear them?

Yes, we can show up. But if we don’t plan, execute and deliver for our clients, it won’t matter.
